You're Not Buying a Cat
(Clarifying a Common Misunderstanding)
By Jackie DeLuca, Treasurer, All About The Cats
It’s easy to assume that the cats at PETCO are “for sale”, since PETCO does house small animals, including fish and birds, that are available to the public for purchase.
The “price” to acquire a cat through our partnership with PETCO is, however, actually a donation, for standard pre-adoption medical care, namely spay / neuter surgery, testing for feline diseases (FIV and Leukemia), and administration of the required vaccinations that cover the cat for a one-year period.
Once the vetting process is complete and a clean bill of health is given, a cat is then placed up for adoption.
We use our connections to partner with local rescue organizations, clinics and veterinarians to secure rates for medical services at the lowest possible cost which in turn keep the adoption donation at an economically comfortable level.
EXAMPLE: A female cat’s spay surgery can cost anywhere between $300 and $500 at most veterinary practices vs. $100 - $200 charged by our partner clinics and includes testing and vaccinations.
The potential adopter must complete an application that allows for reference checks, mainly with the veterinarian and landlord (if renting). In the case of a first-time pet guardian with no veterinarian, two personal references are required.
Upon approval, the adopter pays a donation and receives all related paperwork. It will then be up to the adopter to arrange for annual exams and medical care as needed for the life of the cat.
*Note: There are instances where a rescued cat requires medical attention beyond the standard care mentioned above, for which we use social media to raise funds and eliminate the need to increase the adoption fee.
